Redbirds teams participate in university competitions organized by the NCAA. They are a part of the Missouri Valley Conference in all sports except football, where it competes in the Missouri Valley Football Conference.

The original nickname of Illinois State was that of Teachers, but it was changed in 1923 by the university’s sports director by Redbirds. The pet is Reggie Redbird, and its name has selected in a vote among students in 1980.

Currently, the head of this team is Dan Muller. This team has the national distinction of earning the most National Invitation Tournament berths without making the semifinals. 

Also, they have the longest NCAA Tournament drought (21 years and counting) in the Missouri Valley Conference

The team of 2018-19:

They finished the season 17–16, 9–9 in MVC play to finish in a 3-way tie for the 5th place. As the No. 7 seed in the MVC Tournament, they defeated Evansville before losing to Drake in the quarterfinals.

In their previous season in 2017-18, 18–15, 10–8 in MVC play to finish in a tie for third place. They defeated Missouri State and Southern Illinois to advance to the championship game of the MVC Tournament where they lost to Loyola-Chicago.

Plane crash incident:

In 2015, while they were flying home from the NCAA tournament in Indianapolis. A flight carrying Illinois State assistant coach Torrey Ward and 6 other players crashed just outside Bloomington, Illinois. In this accident, no one was survived. Read more about NCAA here.
