Argentinian Basketball League, formerly known as the National Ascent Tournament, is the second category in Argentine basketball. It has been organizing since 1992 by the Club Association.
It has 28 teams, and its competition format has been changing over time, assimilating the changes in places that existed in this contest.
The competition in the two top categories starts between the end of September and the beginning of October. It ends between the end of May and the beginning of June of the following year.
In the first division, a first phase plays where the teams separate for geographical convenience. In 2 zones (north and south) and face in round-trip matches only between the teams in their area.
The first 4 of each group qualify for the Super 8 Tournament. In the second phase, they all face each other by dragging half of the points of the first phase.
Once the second phase finishes, the first team in the table classifies directly to the quarterfinals. Those who are positioning from fifth to twelfth place play reclassification.
The last 4 teams play a Play-Off to define the 2 descents. The Play-Off for the championship plays at the best of 5 matches. The first one that reaches 3 wins with the 2-2-1 format, in the reclassification, the quarterfinals, and the semifinal.
History of Argentinian Basketball League:
Until the 2000-01 season it had 16 teams and to the next tournament, there were 14, a trend that lasted two seasons, to return to the original number to the next. However, this number fluctuated for several seasons.
In 2015 there is a new expansion in the category, going from 24 to 28 teams, regionalizing more competition. However, this plan did not work and during the 2015-16 season. There were 26 teams, a number that was repeating in the following season. Read more about Argentinian basketball here.
