Purdue Basketball: The Purdue Boilermakers Basketball team is the college basketball program that competes in NCAA Division 1. They are also a member of the Big Ten Conference.

The origin of the original name of Boilermakers comes from the qualifier that a newspaper gave them in 1891. They got it after losing a 44-0 American football game against an eternal rival, Wabash College.

Over the years they have adopted a host of names, most of them with a seemingly derogatory character. Names such as “pumpkin growers”, “blacksmiths” or “corn sailors”, although it was finally the occurrence of the 19th-century press which prevailed.

History and achievements of Purdue Basketball Team:

The origins of the basketball section date back to 1896. Their best seasons were in 1969. They first reached the NCAA Final Four, being beaten by the then invincible Bruins of UCLA, with Lew Alcindor in the lead, and 1980. Also, they managed to finish again among the 4 best universities in the country. Throughout their history, they have been 20 times champions of their Conference.

In total there have been 29 Purdue players who have played in the NBA, including two numbers one in the draft, Glenn Robinson (1994) and Joe Barry Carroll (1980).

Until 1889, the football team competed as an independent. They finally joined the Big Ten Conference in 1896. Their greatest achievements were the achievement of the Rose Bowl in 1967, by beating the University of Southern California and the Sun Bowl in 2002. Read more about NCAA here.
